George GYNN, was a Merchant-Tailor in London. "To break off from discussing Hertfordshire families as such for a moment, I thought I would mention the Coat of Arms for the Hertfordshire Ginn Family, though strictly the family of George Ginn of Stevenage and the City of London, a Merchant Tailor. George Ginn was born in the reign of King Henry the 8th in Stevenage. He went to London and was apprenticed as a Merchant Tailor and later granted Freedom of the City. He did quite well for himself during the reign of Good Queen Bess, married and had three sons and a daughter - Wilfred, William, Richard and Jane. All three sons are mentioned in various surviving records and two are known to have married, but the Ginn line died out. Jane married a man called Cook and had a number of children, some (as are the Ginn family themselves) mentioned in "Boyds Inhabitants of London" (GHB; https://ginn-hertfordshire.blogspot.com/2012/07/ginn-coat-of-arms.html) - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - Michael Taylor says: "I do not know who Geo's parents are - it is too early but I think he mentioned a bro in his will" - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - Geo. They have not a “ ploughland in tillage or pasture ” in the county of Hertford. They have been charged with the repair of highways in the parish of Enfield, but have not been so charged in Chesthunt. He married Alice Porter about 1548 and they had at least six children. http://www.franksfamilytree.net/family/pages/06F015.html Margaret Fordham was born about 1556 in Sacomb, Herefordshire [actually Hertfordshire] see: Ancestral File https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:M484-LBW; Submitted by pshalstead2517775 see: Pedigree Resource File https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:3M67-7MK But a link on this SAME page shows: Info on William of Sacomb Fordham as married to Elizabeth GOURNEY who was born ABT 1567 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire So William was already 47 when she was born hunh?????????? probably not https://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/trees/128581/I83150/-/individual Familysearch shows Philip Fordham as married to Elizabeth GOURNEY this seems more plausible. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:3M67-7MK http://www.franksfamilytree.net/family/pages/06F019.html http://www.franksfamilytree.net/family/surnames/fordham.html

The Kensington Society Annual Report 1984-85 2. 1599-1848 North-Crofts (aka Talbots) sold to Robert GYNNE and then sold by his son to John Marsh (a) The 15 acres emerge as North-Crofts The second period opens with an indenture of 1599, wherein two closes called North-Crofts, which later deeds enable us to recognize as the l5 acres, were singled out from their surroundings. The preliminaries go back to 1596, when Elizabeth I granted to Robert Horseman, gentleman, the reversion of a 3l-year lease granted by Letters Patent of 25 July 1570 to the queen's maid-servant Elizabeth Snow, widow. Horseman was to have the site of the manor and the rectory of [Abbot's] Kensington, all buildings, demesnes, Pastures, glebe lands and certain tithes and hereditaments, late of the monastery of Abingdon, for 2l years at a rent of f 19 6s. 8d. pg 28 ... b) The 15 acres (the Talbot and the 13 acres adjoining) as a mainly agrarian entity 1618-1848 On 10 April 1618, Robert Horseman of Kensington, Esquire, sold to Robert GYNNE of Stevenage, Hertford, gentleman, for £990 all his moiety of all the tithes of corn and grain within the town, fields and parish of Kensington in the tenure of William Davies, with certain named exceptions; also 'All that capital messuage with the barns, stables, outhouses, gardens, orchard and yard thereto belonging with their appurtenances, called or known by the sign of the Talbot and two closes of arable and pasture land containing together by estimation l3 acres, more or less, to the said messuage next adjoining, situate . . . in the parish of Kensington . . . which said messuage and closes are now in the tenure of' Richard Reeve and Grace his wife ... . pg 30 Reverting to the main theme, we find Robert GYNNE in 1622 leasing the property to a Mary Short for fifty years at a peppercorn rent, and by mid-1630 engaged, with his wife Elizabeth, in selling it to Sir William Blake of Hale-house, Brompton, knight. Even while the legal routine of his late father's purchase was still incomplete, the administrator combined with GYNNE to sell the property. Jointly, in February 1631, for 'a competent sum' to Blake and £130 to GYNNE, they conveyed to John Marsh of Fulham, yeoman, and his heirs in perpetuity the moiety of the tithes GYNNE had bought from Horseman in l6l8, together with the Talbot and the two closes of arable and pasture land of 13 acres adjoining, now or late in the tenure of Richard Reeve and his wife Grace, with reversions and all deeds in good condition, the vendors having good title. pg 31 pg 28 - 31 https://www.kensingtonsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/Annual-Report-1984.pdf see also: Old Kew, Chiswick and Kensington Author : Sanders, Lloyd Charles, 1857- Published in 1910 see: Ch. 1 Early Kensington In 1595 they were leased to Robert Horseman, and then the inevitable Walter Cope appeared on the scene with an offer to purchase the manor through trustees. Horseman was sorely unwilling to be evicted ; the Queen intervened and settled a compromise. By the terms of the agreement, as given by Faulkner, Horseman bought back for £665. 6s. Set., the fee simple of his house and glebe lands amounting to about 200 acres and the tithes. He also kept " one piece of meadow called 'the Moor' lying on the east side of the said mansion-house, and in which the conduit-head, serving for the Queen's mansion-house at Chelsea then stood." This was the present Palace Green, and the conduit-head was Henry VIII's conduit, purposelessly destroyed in 1871. Two enclosures, lying to the north of the road to Acton, Norlands, whence the present Norland Square, and North Crofts were also retained by Horseman. The rest of the manor, with an orchard particularly specified, went to Cope, who a few years later acquired the parsonage and manor house. Horseman soon parted with his tithes to Robert GYNNE for the sum of £990. https://archive.org/details/oldkewchiswickke00sand/page/154/mode/2up?ref=ol&view=theater see also: Kensington : picturesque and historical by Loftie, W. File: [ 74 ] [ Thomas_Gynn_1615_Damaris_Sanford.txt ]
Henry Ginn of Fyfield d. 1615 I will tell you a story ........... Much Hadham is near Bishops Stortford, I know it fairly well. Bishops Stortford and Chelmsford would have been the market towns known to Tom, and his father owned property in the former. Now, in the 1590s there is a Thomas Sanford and his wife Mary in Much Hadham. Thomas Sanford came from Stanstead Mountfithet in Essex (which I also know) but in the 1590s he was pursuing his trade as a glover in Much Hadham, His eldest son Ezekiel and various members of the Sanford family went out to the American colonies in 1630 or so and that story is quite well told online and on Ancestry. We are told for instance that his brother Richard died in 1636 in North Weald near Chipping Ongar ie "Fyfield Ginn country". Thomas Sanford died in 1597. He left a number of sons and three daughters - Priscilla, Sara and Damaris. His widow remarried. Now we know that Priscilla married Thomas Howe at Much Hadham in 1609 - there were issue. Her sister Sara also married a Howe. Damaris sadly died in November 1615 - she was just over 21. In the room in which she was dying were her mother, her sister Sarah Howe and a Thomas Ginn. We know this because Damaris, obviouly failing quickly, did not have time to have someone write her will - she left a nuncupative will ie she made a verbal will declared in the presence of her mother, her sister and Thomas Ginn (ERO) Now, the question that came to me - why was Thomas Ginn in the room ? I am sadly of an age when I have been in such rooms and only those close to the deceased are there, and some of those reluctant to be. It is not a memory you want. So, I repeat, why was Thomas Ginn there ? Was he betrothed to Damaris, was he a relation - was he both ? Is the Thomas Howe in the Sanford story Arthur Ginn's "well beloved brother in law" ? I do not know. It could be a stonking coincidence as I say- or the question could have wings. In any event that same Thomas Ginn later appear married and mentioned in the will of the gloriously Anglo Saxon named Etheldred Westwood in 1639. I will leave it with you - research awaits https://ginn-hertfordshire.blogspot.com/2012/07/henry-ginn-of-fyfield-d-1615.html "Thomas Sanford, the emigrant to New England; ancestry, life, and descendants, 1632-4. Sketches of four other pioneer Sanfords and some of their descendants" "Pro anticipacione. Rich. Sanfford, g. " (no amount given) The letter "g" indicates that he was to pay an unnamed sum upon his goods, by which is understood that he was a merchant engaged in some trade solely, or in addition to farming, possibly that of a glover. The Sanfords who appear after him, in Great Hadham, were glovers. The will mentions no Sanford relatives; it does refer to real estate this first Richard Sanford owned in Hatfield (Broad Oak), a parish a few miles to the eastward and within the boundary of the adjoining county of Essex, where we shall soon see the father of our Thomas Sanford, the emigrant, was married. The will also shows that the testator's father (Christian name unknown) had lived in Great Hadham. This indicates the presence of Sanfords in the parish as early as 1500. " pg 23-24 Damaris Sanford's will was spoken in the in "the presence of Mary Hadesly and Thomas GYNN, the said Sara Howe with others. " pg 29 "Much Hadham was a local center for the trade in fine skins, and Thomas Sanford, the father of Ezechiell and the four other children, was a glover. His product was sold both within and without the town. He may well have sent gloves to London since there were various dealings with London from Much Hadham, owing to the manor being the property of the Bishop of London, who maintained a palace in the town and came here frequently with a large retinue of servants, accompanied and followed by members of the gentry. These latter found the vale, in which the village lies, most sweet and sylvan, as it still is. A bishop of London then was well-nigh as powerful as a duke. The long village street was oft the path for the feet and equipages of some of the high and mighty. " pg 29 https://archive.org/details/thomassanfordemi01sanf/page/28/mode/2up?q=gynn With that in mind, the Sanfords being glove merchants in Much Hadham, and likely that Thomas GYNN, was related to George GYNN,. Sanford gloves probably made their way into his shop or to his clientele. 24 years after the death of Damaris, the Thomas GYNN, in Etheldred Westwood's will in 1639 is married. She had a long memory. She also specifically says "Thomas Horwood, my father in law" in the will, so how could she be a spinster? Was she actually a widow? Were these the 'GYNN's' of Stevenage? Stondon is quite a distance from Much Hadham so who was Etheldred Westwood to Thomas GYNN,? Is this 'Thomas Horwood, Mayor? Elizabeth I installation What was it like to go shopping in Elizabethan London? This week we have been installing the exhibition Elizabeth I and Her People, which includes a fascinating manuscript in the collections of the National Archives that lists the contents of an Elizabethan haberdasher’s London warehouse from 1582. The haberdasher was William GYNN, and he was being sued for a debt of a hundred pounds, and so an inventory was made of some of his goods (TNA C 239/48, no.104). https://www.npg.org.uk/blog/elizabeth-i-installations https://www.npg.org.uk/assets/images/assets/blog/large_%20Inventory.jpg

He was the eldest son of Edmund who died in 1553 (??); and he died intestate. But administration* was granted on the first of February, 1566/7, to George Peryent, brother of Katherine Bacon, relict of John Bacon of Troston armiger with the consent of the before-named Katherine. An inquisition was held on the 26th day of May next following; which is given here at length to show the great size to which the property of the Hessett branch of the Bacon family had grown at this the date of its greatest worldly prosperity". pg 86 https://archive.org/details/proceedingsofsuf05unse/page/86/mode/2up Stirnet show him as son of Thomas or John Bacon of Helmingham (d 28.02.1535); Is there another son, Edmund (d. 1533) (??) Robert Bacon, descended from 'Roger de Beccen' is originally from Normandy and links to Gill and Perient; George Perient, whose family is also originally from Normandy links to Lavenham and Gill links to GYNN,. Also, we know that GYNNE and Gill had a relationship long before the marriage of John and Mary. Edward Gill and a Thomas GYNNE appear to have had a dispute over money just before Mary was born. (See: Thomas_GYNNE_Edward_Gill_1640.txt) This Thomas who married Martha at Great Hormead might be the brother of William (b. 1599), John's father who married Elizabeth Stringer in 1635 at Anstey. It appears this was settled by the time Mary married John 20 years later. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to find information about an Edward GENNE or GYNNE who lived in Lavenham: An Edward GENNE married Elizabeth Jenoson on 1 Sep 1605 in Lavenham (Note 1) This is earliest known occurence of a GENNE or GYNNE with forename 'Edward' in Lavenham. Where did Edward come from? An Edward GENNE or GYNNE had at least 4 children in Lavenham: Eliz GYNNE (b 1607), Thomas GENNE (b 1609), Edward GYNNE (b 1611) and John GYNNE (b 1617) (See Suffolk in Ginn IGI by County.xlsx, lines 54 - 57) Probably the same man. There is no evidence that 'GYNNEs' were anything more than labourers in the wool trade, or possibly servants. ----------------------------------------- Notes: 1. In 1447 John Turnour son of Thomas Turnour is recorded as living in Lavenham. Since then we have records of Turners as Marine Store dealers, bakers, chandlers, cutters, sawyers, bricklayers, gamekeepers and flour millers. Among the very many families they married, Ranson and Girling stand out proudly as linked to the past and recent history of the village for their records of our history. Members of the Turner family can be seen in some of our oldest village photographs of the Market square. Of the ten wealthiest clothiers in the country, two were in Lavenham, eight sat outside of Lavenham: the first and 5th wealthiest were in Bildeston, six of the ten wealthiest in Hadleigh, Spring made number 7, Jacob number ten. Of the top 100 wealthiest clothiers in Europe, 26 lived in Lavenham, making Lavenham by far the most productive producer of both broadcloth and straites in Europe in the 15th and 16th C.
